31 days of Horror: Day One-The Guardian

The Guardian (1990)

For the last couple of years I've done a horror movie blog during the month of October with my friend Adam, called Blogoween over at the Scope web page. Blogoween isn't happening this year, but I've decided to do a less involved list here on Solamente Nero.

I'm getting started a day late for my write ups, but I did watch this yesterday. The Exorcist is one of my favorite horror movies, so I came to Willian Friedkin's 1990 film The Guardian with high hopes. The bad news is that there is little evidence here of the master film maker who made, what I believe to be the scariest film ever made. The good news is that even when Friedkin goes off the rails(as he did in Cruising, for example) he can still deliver an entertaining movie.

The plot here involves a couple of yuppies, who want to hire a live in nanny to take care of their new baby, while they have fashionable careers. Unfortunately, instead of one of the underclass, they hire an ancient woodland spirit to do the job. This as you can imagine leads to trees murdering local toughs, and wolves attacking architects.

If you just go along for the ride, and don't think too much about the various kinds of nonsense being tossed your way, a good time can be had. Just don't expect to be scared.
