31 days of Horror: Day Thirteen: Night Of The Bloody Apes

Night Of The Bloody Apes 1972
Directed by  René Cardona  (new footage for US version directed by Jerald Intrator)

Night Of The Bloody Apes is the 1972 English dubbed version of the 1969 Mexican Horror Film La horripilante bestia humana, which is it self a remake of the director's 1962 Lucha Film Las Luchadoras contra el medico asesino ("The Wrestling Women vs. the Murderous Doctor). Is that clear? It doesn't matter. All you need to know is that it's a lurid low budget Mexican Horror movie featuring gratuitous gore, nudity, and Wrestling.

Some of the gratuity was added in 1972 when the film was dubbed in English, and renamed for the American Drive In circuit. The film begins with a wrestling match between Lucy, a masked wrestler who wears a devil like red costume, and her green garbed opponent. Lucy throws the other Woman out of the ring where she sustains a serious head injury. Lucy is racked with guilt, though her Police detective boyfriend assures her that it was just an accident. The other wrestler is taken to a nearby hospital where she goes into a coma.

Meanwhile the Head Doctor from the hospital, and his assistant sneak into the zoo where they shoot a guy in a gorilla suit with a tranquilizer dart. The Doctor's son has untreatable leukaemia, but the Doctor wants to try a gorilla heart transplant/blood transfusion. See he needs the gorilla heart because his son's regular human heard couldn't handle the powerful animal blood which will surely overcome the cancer. Unfortunately once the transplant takes place (including actual heart transplant footage) the gorilla heart/blood makes the son turn into a murderous ape-man.

As the bodies begin to pile up, Lucy's detective boyfriend is put on the case, which is getting in the way of the quality time they want to spend together, and besides that Lucy can't wrestle any more because she's too afraid of hurting somebody else, but that's fine anyway because detective boyfriend wants her to give up wrestling anyway.

Watching this movie is kind of like reading that sentence, but more fun. This an old fashioned shitty monster movie, with ridiculous plot, and bad monster make up. The whole thing feels more like a throwback to the 50's in terms of plot, but with nudity and gore thrown into the mix. Visually the film looks great. It's shot in Eastman colour with an emphasis on lurid reds and greens. It kind of has the look of a certain era of American TV, like gory violent episode of Batman, or Star Trek. Even the score sounds like something from Star Trek. All these things work in the films favour.

If you leave your brain at home, this thing is a good time.
